Workshop: Thursday, August 28, 2003, 9:30 AM to 3:30 PM -- Suzani Quilt
Students will be working with very close tones and circular shapes to develop their own versions of the Suzani quilt. Class will focus on color development, simple piecing, and an innovative method of machine appliqué using bias binding. This is a class for intermediate quilt makers.
Illustrated on pages 22, 23 and 82 of Passionate Patchwork, co-authored with Kaffe Fassett.
Supply list:
The book Passionate
Patchwork
sewing machine
usual sewing supplies including thread and pins
good fabric scissors
rotary cutter
large mat and ruler
flannel for design boards of at least 44 by 60 inches
at least four yards of stabilizer tear-away paper
Fabrics:
Use Passionate Patchwork as a guide for fabric amounts. The colors used in the Passionate Patchwork Suzani quilt were ochres from chartreuse to deep oranges with lavender as the contrasting color. Choose a monochromatic palette with small amounts of a contrasting color. An alternative to the book's quilt would be turquoises, blues and greens, with a tiny accent of orange. The fabrics for the background and snowballs can be simple prints. The fabric for the circles should be solids or Kaffe's shot cottons.
One yard of bold stripe will be cut into a continuous bias to make a candy cane-like strip to surround the large circles. We used one of Kaffe's Bold Stripes, but any strong stripe will do. You could even use a black and white stripe for a contemporary look.
Fabrics should be prewashed and well pressed. You may wish to save class time by following the book's directions to pre-cut the bias stripe and to make your own templates.
