Liberated Block Construction

A workshop with Gwen Marston

Wednesday & Thursday

 April 16 & 17, 2003

9:30 to 3:30 pm

"This class is based on my method for making folk style scrap quilts.  Quilters learn my new techniques of free piecing original blocks based on traditional ideas.  I think of this system as “liberated block construction.”  It is fun and easy for all skill levels. Each class is illustrated with my own quilts.   Each student should be able to complete at least one small quilt top."

Gwen Marston will begin the first day with a demonstration of her liberated log cabin, which participants will then make; next, a demonstration of her liberated house block and liberated stars block, which participants will also make. The next day and half will be devoted to making a top of any one of these blocks with the other two as highlights. Gwen will discuss different ideas for using different liberated blocks, and provide individual assistance with our selected tops. She says, "Student should be able to complete at least one small quilt top in the two-day workshop while learning a lot of different techniques."

Sewing machine with basic sewing kit

Rotary cutter and six inch ruler

Piece of white fleece or flannel, at least 30" x 42" for your 40" x 60" design board (Guild provides)

Fabrics: we will be making scrap style quilts so bring a wide variety of fabric -- pieces from six inches square to fat quarters. Plus 1/2 yard for lattice/borders. Solids, prints, or a combination of both work equally well. Gwen says: "Bring fabrics you love to work with. These liberated tops work equally well when limited to something like batiks or reproduction fabrics, or as scrap quilts."

Techniques shown are from Gwen's 1996 book Liberated Quiltmaking, AQS.               .
