Color / Value Blending In Green

Our day begins with an important study of color terminology and
fabric comparison
....mainly in green. We will broaden our definition of
green, to include all types of greens: blue greens, yellow greens, light
greens, dark greens, muted greens, truer greens, and green prints of
different scales. Also bring some multicolored-with-green fabrics, too.
After our color study work, we embark on our patchwork of the day, the
Snail's Trail. However there will exist a challenge or two; watercolor
( or colorwash) blending
, and value gradation. The result will be a
stunning green quilt which exhibits a secondary design. The sample I have
sent to your guild uses 7" blocks. These have proven to be a bit small, so
we will make nine 8" blocks.
BEFORE CLASS, please:

1. Gather together the following supplies and fabrics.
___Paper/pen ___Reducing glass ___Colorwheel ___Rotary stuff
___Notions ___Sewing machine ___Design fleece, push pins / tape?
___20 'greens' for color study(1/4 yd ea) See expanded definition above.
___Other 'green' fabrics with our colorwash Snail's Trail in mind. A good
watercolor fabric is medium or large scale and can pass the following test.
If you were to cut two 2" squares out of this fabric, would each square
look different from each other when viewed from 5 feet away? Answer
should be yes. Foliage fabrics work wonderfully. Use of a few

multicolored florals is fine.

2. Make nine black and white 4-patches, measuring 2" X 2"
finished. (2-1/2"X2-1/2" unfinished)

Cut 1 strip (30" long) 1-1/2" wide, in solid or slightly patterned black.
Cut 1 strip of white or off-white (30" long) 1-1/2" wide.

Strip-piece together with 1/4" seam allowance.

Crosscut the black-white strip-set every 1-1/2" to get 18 two-patches.
Piece these into nine 4-patches. These will be the centers of your

Snail's Trail blocks. If you do not get to this, you may sew them in class.

I will bring fat quarters suitable for our work. They will be available for
sale. Any questions, feel free to call me at 510-527-2063.
