BARBARA SHAPIRO

S o u r c e s   o f   I n s p i r a t i o n

January 16, 2004

Barbara Shapiro’s involvement with textiles began at an early age. She started weaving in New York City in 1975 and was involved in the San Francisco Art to Wear movement in the '70s and '80s. She then shifted her focus to non-functional textile art.  Combining her rich knowledge of historical and ethnic textiles with wide technical experience in weaving and surface design, Barbara's work reflects her travels and studies as well as her work in theater costume design.

A sense of ancient languages and cultures permeates the wall hangings created by this California artist.  Her work is inspired by the richness of old manuscripts, stone buttresses, jade carvings and mellowed bones.  Barbara says, “My insight into how I got to this point artistically and what has motivated me is the basis of my lecture.  I will discuss my personal textile history and touch on historic and contemporary textile art that I respond to.  I hope to introduce you to my work and inspire you to expand your way of working.”

Ann Graf

Guild Librarian

The last two additions to our library from the '03 budget are... TOTALLY TUBULAR QUILTS  byRita Hutchins and LANDSCAPE QUILTS by Nancy Ziemans and Natalie Sewell.

The first illustrates intriguing variations on strip-piecing, creating diamonds, triangles and more innovative geometrics. The second book inspires us to more picture and landscape wall hangings with permission to fuse and glue!

They should be processed by mid-January. Check them out!

GUILD GLIMMERS

By Jeri Taylor

It was a cold and blustery day on December 12, but inside the auditorium of Gualala Arts, everything was toasty and cozy.  The room was decorated in festive fashion and the tantalizing aroma of home made soup wafted through the air.  Guild members deposited their offerings of salads and desserts on the buffet tables and placed their fat quarters (disguised in brown paper bags) on the bar.

The lunch was outstanding, with the soup earning kudos from everyone – just the thing for a raw winter’s day.  And the quilters proved once again that they can not only quilt, but cook!

Then it was time for The Game.  First we went “fishing,” hooking (with Carol Tackett’s help) one of the aforementioned brown paper bags.  Then ensued a devilish game of pass the bag, all to the cleverly written and recited story by Marilyn Limbaugh.  After a furious frenzy of passing, back and forth, back and forth, each member ended up with a much-mutilated paper bag and four new fat quarters for their stashes!

Marilyn and Carol deserve effusive praise for their hard work, beautiful decorations, terrific soup, and madcap game.  All that and a napkin folding lesson too!  Thanks, ladies!

COMFORT QUILT DELIVERIES

By Polly Dakin

The Comfort Quilt Committee delivered fourteen quilts to Project Santa in our area two weeks ago. Linda Warnock was there to help present the quilts. It was really wonderful to give them to our immediate needy neighbors. Janet Flink was most appreciative, and the need was great.

Also,  ten Comfort Quilts were delivered by Dee Goodrich, a member of the Guild from Fort Bragg, to the Fort Bragg Redwood Coast Regional Center. This was the first time that they had been a recipient.

These were all delivered in the month of December, and now we have only two backup quilts left. Hopefully some more of the quilts that were started at the Comfort Quilt Workshop will be finished in the near future.  I have

ordered more batting from Marva at the Loft, and we will sell some of the batik fabrics at the next guild meeting to support the Comfort Quilt Project.

February with Freddie Cancelled

Due to a lack of sufficient sign ups, the February workshop featuring Freddie Moran has been cancelled.

In its place we will host a Comfort Quilt Workshop. The date is February 19th, from 10am to 4pm at Gualala Arts. Please note the time change to a later start, as we must allow the Aerobics folks to finish up without us packing our sewing machines in on top of their weights and mats.

This is a timely change as Polly noted in the Comfort Quilt article that we are down to just two quilts on hand, and it has been mightly cold outside.

Velda Newman

Layers: Form and Texture

Saturday/Sunday, September 18-19, 2004

Velda's class throws all the rules of stringent design out the window. First we will construct units by exploring machine techniques for texture

and form; then add color and depth with paint and colored pencils.  Finally, the units will be assembled, collage style, into one fabulous piece.  Velda says, "You will find working in the collage style easy and liberating." Beginners to advanced.

Workshop price will be $130. Special deal if you sign up by our January 16 meeting -- $110.50

Triple Decker Day

in September featured a variety of our members demonstrating techniques and equipment. See the photos at www.pacificpiecemakers.org/3Decker.htm
