GUILD GLIMMERS

By Jeri Taylor

Suzan Friedland was the inspirational speaker at last month’s Guild meeting, and she surprised and delighted the audience by urging everyone to touch, feel, and handle her work!  This kind of “hands on” approach is appropriate for her beautiful textiles, which are heavily painted, textured, and quilted.

Suzan finds her inspiration in a number of sources, including nature, Zen calligraphy, and science (she is married to an astrophysicist).  Her works “Golden Mean, Silver Mean, and Copper Mean,” were inspired by the Greek golden ratio, which her husband translated into binary code.  Suzan then created a triptych of bold ones and zeros which reflected that ratio.

In an interesting turnaround, she often names a piece before she makes it!  She knew, for instance, that she wanted a piece called “Green Tea,” and ended up with an Asian-inspired work that clearly evokes that soothing drink.

Because she and her husband are building a straw bale house, she began experimenting with adobe (yes, including horse manure) and texturing fabric with it.  The result is a unique reddish color and fabric that feels much like leather.

In all, she is an exceptional and free-thinking artist whose works surely inspired many of us.

PRESIDENT’S CORNER

VITA BREVE—CARPE DIEM

When Paula Osborne became Guild President, I remember her motto was “Just Do It!”  I’m not sure if Linda Warnock had a motto, but judging by her many accomplishments, I believe her motto must have been “Get It Done.”  Now that they have taken care of everything, I think my motto will be “Vita Breve—Carpe Diem.”  Life is short — seize the day.

This is the motto of a little local beer company in Ft. Bragg.  When I came upon it I realized this was a guiding philosophy for me.  Within the Guild we all have the opportunity to Seize the Day, to try something new.  We have the opportunity to make new friends and invite others to share our art and interest.  Every month the Guild sponsors many different types of activities.  I hope you will sign up for a workshop or class and get involved in supporting your Guild.

APRIL

April 15 & 16

Gualala Arts

We are highlighting two of our outstanding members in April.  On Thursday, April 15, Iris Lorenz-Fife will teach a one-day workshop on “No Math Drafting.”  She promises the class will NOT deal with triangles.  Iris has worked out her own unique method of drafting which should appeal to everyone, not just the mathematically challenged.  The cost is $25 for the day.  Sign up with Laurie Mueller (785-9533,  laurie@mcn.org, P.O. Box 314, TSR 95497).

On Friday, April 16, Mary Austin will lecture at our regular meeting on “Japan: Culture through Textiles.”  As most of you know, Mary has traveled extensively in Japan, collected many gorgeous fabrics there, and created exquisite quilts.  We are fortunate to be able to share her knowledge and experience with this fascinating culture.

Social hour will begin at 12:30, and our business meeting will precede the lecture.

            See you there!

A BIG THANK YOU!

Dear Hard Working Comfort Quilters,

The Comfort Quilt Committee is overwhelmed with the response and the artistic quality of the wonderful quilts for our immediate community needs!  We now have eleven quilts set aside —not including the ones hanging at the Art Center. We were a little concerned at the beginning of the year because we had so few on hand, and those were going out the door.  But you all responded to the call and we now all can rest on our "laurels," (for a while) and work on the challenge quilts and the special projects that all of us have started.
THANK YOU EACH AND EVERY ONE FOR SUPPORTING THE EFFORT!
Polly Dakin, Joyce Gaudet, Dee Goodrich

PROGRESSIVE QUILT

Ellen Soule will spearhead the Progressive Quilt this year, and announced in our March meeting that it would begin in the fall.  Get started on those 12” squares!

A WHOLE NEW MEANING TO “COMFORT”

Running out of recipients for your quilts?  Medical students at Yale University, after completing their anatomy course, created a colorful quilt to honor their cadavers, with panels dedicated to each of the bodies they dissected in class.
