Velda Newman -- Layers: Form and Texture

Workshop: Saturday/Sunday September 18-19, 2004 -- 9:30 AM to 3:30 PM

                                               

Description: This class throws all the rules of stringent design out the window.  First we will construct units by exploring machine techniques for texture and form.  Then we will add color and depth with paint and colored pencils.  Finally, the units will be assembled, collage style, into one fabulous piece.  You will find working in the collage style easy and liberating. Subjects that work well are anything that can be layered, like fruits, vegetables, shells, dishes, flowers, leaves...  Let your imagination run wild!

Supply list: In addition to the items below, you will need patterns and paints which Velda Newman will supply for a $15 lab fee per person.  You may also want her book:

All fabrics for this class must be solids or hand-dyed cottons

            1/2 yard medium yellow green fabric    

            1/2 yard medium yellow fabric

            1/2 yard dark brown fabric

            2 yards pale yellow fabric

1 yard white fabric

1 yard thin cotton batting

1/2 yard cheesecloth (found in grocery stores in packages)

1/2 yard cotton duck or canvas, medium weight, natural color (washed)

3 or 4 bobbins filled with neutral thread

threads to match fabrics

One 2" paintbrush (inexpensive) found at paint/hardware store

paintbrushes for acrylic paint: the 1/2" flat and medium-size round are good choices

fabric marker: black-fine tip

fabric marker: purple disappearing (air) pen

plastic dropcloth

2 or 3 white, plastic or Styrofoam plates

2 small containers for water

paper towels

apron

hairdryer (1 to each pair of tables)

14" hoop: for painting techniques (cost about $3 in craft stores)

basic sewing supplies

sewing machine in good working order

walking foot for machine

free motion foot for machine
